Treadmills - How to Maximize Benefits
January 24th, 2008 Shabu
Can you work out with a treadmill in any which way and expect the best of benefits? Unfortunately the answer is NO. You have to observe certain rules to derive maximum benefits.
Workouts with treadmills provide health benefits similar to walking. The benefits of walking can be summarized as:
1. Toning up body limbs and internal organs
2. Aerobic benefits for breathing and blood circulation
3. Reducing weight through burning calories (if you are overweight)
4. Better body posture acquired through walking erect with head held high
Walking is usually done outdoors, where you face wind resistance. This factor adds to the effort involved and helps burn accumulated calories, and provides more exercise to lungs and heart.
Working out with treadmills is usually done indoors with no wind resistance. To compensate for the lesser effort, you can walk on an inclined tread. Treadmills like ProForm Treadmills typically provide power inclines. You can easily adjust the tread’s incline using this facility. This leads to greater effort and burning of calories.
The handrails that are provided with treadmills can be another problem. The handrails help beginners from falling off. However, if you use the handrails even after you have learnt how to balance yourself, you would lose the benefit of better body posture. Holding handrails in a stooped position does not lead to good body posture.
You have to work out with your head held high, and hands “pumping” free by your sides. That way, you would simulate the best kind of walking, and gain a wonderful body posture.
Observe these rules and you can expect the best of benefits.
